Recent Advances in Phytochemistry 42, DOI 10.1007/978-1-4614-4066-6_3, © Springer Science+Business Media New York 2012 Abstract Fescue toxicosis and perennial ryegrass staggers are two of the most common toxic plant diseases plaguing livestock in the United States, and result from consumption of forage containing the endophyte-produced mycotoxins ergovaline and lysergic acid (fescue toxicosis) and lolitrem B (ryegrass staggers). Our group has developed analytical assays for detecting these compounds, which serve a dual purpose (1) high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence assays are used to measure these compounds in feed material in order to promote “safe feed” through diagnostic testing in a service laboratory environment, and (2) highly sensitive and specific liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry assays are utilized to study the fate and metabolism of these compounds in a diversity of livestock matrices so that a more refined understanding as to the etiology of the diseases these compounds cause can be achieved. A discussion applying these techniques to both current and anticipated studies is given, with an emphasis on impacts to trade and food safety regulation.

Mycotoxicoses in veterinary medicine: Aspergillosis and penicilliosis

Molds and mycotoxins are contaminants of animal feed causing spoilage and clinical intoxication. Animal exposure to mycotoxins reflects diet composition with major differences occurring between animals kept predominantly of pastures, i.e. ruminants and horses, and those consuming formulated feed like pigs and poultry. Mixed feeds are composed of several ingredients, often sourced from different...

Fungal Contamination of Feed Material Manufactured in Iran with Emphasis on Its Importance in Safety of Animal Origin Foods

Background: Mycotoxins are a group of structurally diverse substances produced by a wide range of moulds. These fungal secondary metabolites, whose presence in feed is unavoidable, can impose hazards to human and animal health. Continuous concern about potential effects of mycotoxins in the human diet has led to an increasing interest in researches about fungi and mycotoxin production. The aim ...

Anatomo-Pathological Consequences of Mycotoxins Contamination in Rabbits Feed

Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites produced by certain filamentous microscopic fungi, which occur naturally in the environment and may persist in animal feed. A mycotoxin contaminated diet may lead to feed refusal, poor feed conversion, diminished body weight gain and causes pathological effects associated with gross and histological changes, which are responsible for great economical losses....
